Student Placements Print E-mail

Izmir University has an "Extended Erasmus University Charter" which allows students to participate in erasmus placements.

Placement is a period which allows students registered in a higher education institution to gain professional / work experience in another country attending the eramus program.  The Erasmus placement period cannot be used to conduct research or analysis projects related to academic studies within a certain program. Placement is an activity where the student gains applied work experience in the field in which he / she is a student.  The sector of the placement should be related to the student’s education program.

The duration of placement is minimum 3, maximum 12 months for undergraduate and graduate students.  The duration of placement for associate degree students is minimum 2 months, maximum 12 months.

Host institutions are firms, companies, education and research centers, regardless of their size and economic sector, whether private or state-owned, a host institution.

If the host institution where the placement will take place is a higher education institution, since it will be evaluated as a company, it is not necessary for this institution to have an Erasmus charter.

The following institutions are not suitable for Erasmus placements:

-European Union institutions and EU agencies

-Institutions implementing EU Programs and getting funds in this framework

-Our diplomatic representations in the host country

Announcement, Application and Selection Process

Erasmus placement activity can be conducted in institutions contacted by the home University, or in institutions contacted by the student.

The placements announced by the International Relations or students are subject to the same application and evaluation criteria.

The International Relations Office announces potantial placements on its web page, announcement boards and the university’s mailing group for students, and declares that applications for these posiions or others found personally by the students can be made.

Students who wish to do a placement should first apply to these institutions and get an acceptance.  With the invitation letter sent by the institution, students apply to the International Relations Office.

The selection criteria is determined by the National Agency, which is 55% GPA, 45% foreign language knowledge.

Without an institution to spend the placement period, students cannot apply for this mobility Action.

Financial Support

Students in the Erasmus Placement Program can get partial financial support from the Europan Commission for the period they will spend abroad.  The amount of the monthly fund to be given to the students is determined by the National Agency and announced in the Handbook each year.

The financial support is not to be reclaimed, however it should be noted that the funds are not intended to cover all the expenses of the students; the aim is to relieve the additional expenses incurred by the mobility.  Whether the student will receive a salary from the institution or not depends on their agreed terms with the host institution.

To be able to stick with the application deadlines, the Erasmus Placement Mobility selection process is completed before the National Agency announces the distribution of funds between universities.  However, the selection results will be finalized after the announcement of the distribution of funds by the National Agency.  Students have a candidate status until the funds are announced.  Permanent nomiation is only possible after the distribution of funds is announced.  On the condition that the announced funds are insufficient for all nominated students, Erasmus grades will be used in the distribution of funds among students.

Being nominated for the Erasmus program as a candidate does not automatically guarantee the deserving of funds.

The demand for the Erasmus Program keeps rising consequently, leading to the reduction of funds distributed by the National Agency, causing universities to get less funds than they have requested.   Sometimes, the National Agency makes a second call for additional funds.  If additional funds cannot be acquired, nomiated students can benefit from the exchange opportunity without getting any funds.

Steps to be followed after the selection process:

  1. The names of the nominated students are sent to the University administration.
  2. Students are asked to contact their porspective placement instituion and submit their finalized work plans to the International Relations Office.
  3. The host institution sends the invitation letter which is necessary for the visa.
  4. Students contact the relevant embassy / consulate with their invitation letters, complete the other supporting documentation requested and carry out their visa procedures.

Recognition

Students send a report to the International Relations Office during their placement period.  Likewise, a report about the student is requested from the host institution.  Upon return, the student submits the final report.  The placement period of the student is shown on his/her transcirpt and diploma supplement, with the assigned ECTS credits.
